Ricky Dale: The Modern Torchbearer of Timeless Rock and Roll
Ricky Dale is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music lives at the intersection of classic rock, power-pop, and smooth West Coast grooves. With his upcoming single “California Night” (releasing September 18, 2026, on all streaming platforms), he delivers his most vivid and atmospheric statement yet.
Driven by warm electric piano, stacked vocal harmonies, and a smooth West Coast groove, “California Night” (3:46) is a modern Yacht Rock / Indie-Pop anthem set along California’s Highway 1 at twilight. The track captures the bittersweet atmosphere of a couple cruising in a 1960s Ford Mustang convertible as cold romance rekindles under crashing waves and jasmine air. Blending classic 1970s soft-rock studio craftsmanship with vibrant contemporary indie-pop production, the song appeals equally to fans of classic AOR radio and modern retro-pop tastemakers.
Central to the creation of “California Night” is Ricky’s friend, co-writer, and longtime musical collaborator Rick “Cubby” Katz. Cubby was instrumental in bringing the song to life—taking one of Ricky’s initial ideas and shaping it into a fully realized vision of a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. Together, they built the track’s cinematic imagery and its most memorable instrumental and arrangement moments, continuing a creative partnership that has defined much of Ricky’s recent work.
Ricky’s musical journey began in the 1990s when he left West Texas on a Greyhound bus, arriving in Nashville with big dreams and determination. Already recognized as a powerhouse vocalist, drummer, and aspiring songwriter, he quickly became part of the city’s studio scene. His talent also led to a role as Tour Manager for the Virgin Records rock group Newsboys during their CCM Award-winning 1995–1997 world tour (which produced another RIAA Gold record). During that run, he stepped in on drums for portions of the tour, including a career highlight performing in front of 41,000 fans at the Houston Astrodome.
After years of supporting other artists, Ricky turned fully toward his own music. That path produced the 2024 EP The Soultrain Sound Studios Session (recorded in Nashville with producers Adam Ollendorff and John Richardson), which featured standout tracks such as “Everything’s Changed,” “Crazy Dreams,” and “Real.” Those releases established his signature blend of big hooks, gritty guitars, and soaring vocals while laying the groundwork for the more refined, atmospheric direction heard on “California Night.”
A military veteran who continues to serve, Ricky brings the same discipline and focus to his songwriting and recording that he has applied throughout his life. With “California Night,” he invites listeners into a world of twilight drives, open roads, and the quiet rekindling of connection—music that feels both timeless and of the moment.
